They had departed Mascot at 11.23am on a flight to Cessnock, where they departed at 1.45pm for the return to Mascot. Became lost and Jackson headed east to the coastline until fuel was low so he decided to land to ask directions. Circled a small town and attempted to land on a road near the town. While rolling after landing he was unable to negotiate a bend in the road. The port wingtip hit fence posts and then the starboard wing swung into telegraph poles, aircraft came to rest on its nose.
The town was Gloucester, 65 miles NW of departure point Cessnock.

c56 Reported that Charlie Lee of Parkdale, Melbourne purchased several retired Wackett aiframes from Aircraft Industry Flying Club and moved them from Moorabbin
1.66 Moorabbin Air Museum members visited Mr. Lee's Parkdale property hoping to find a better wing for their VH-AGP. However all that remained was the fuselage frame of VH-AGE, which had been cut in two. The cockpit still had a reasonable amount of equipment, which was donated by Mr. Lee, which will go into the restoration of VH-AGP, which was devoid of any cockpit fittings.
9.66
Fuselage of VH-AGE, cut into two sections was in the Moorabbin Air Museum storage area at the rear of the museum compound.

Possibly connected to the removal of several Wackett fuselage frames from Moorabbin circa 1958 by aircraft enthusiast Don Forbes, who was seen wheeling fuselage frames out of the aerodrome late at night using a wheelbarrow!  These were believed to have been "saved" from the fire crew training area

Wing badly damaged in accident at Deniliqin NSW
A replacement complete mainplane was ordered from Wackett parts dealers Kingsford Smith Aviation Service at Bankstown. To avoid the costs of packing and road transport, KSAS offered to sell AIFC a complete ex RAAF Wackett Trainer which they would prepare to an airworthiness standard for a one-way ferry from Bansktown to Deniliquin. That aircraft A3-56 was ferried to Deniliquin in due course, where AIFC's ground engineer Keith Goedheer removed the mainplane and installed it on VH-BEC's fuselage.  VH-BEC was ferried back to Moorabbin.  See A3-56

Aircraft Industry Flying Club ceased operations and closed down. It is reported that a contributing factor was  having VH-BEC out of service for the lengthy period u/s at Deniquin, plus the cost of its repair.

28.12.48 Crashed on takeoff, Lockhart NSW.  Took off from a field near Lockhart, burnt out.

Canberra Times newspaper: Wagga, Tuesday (28.12.48): Frederick Burke, 23, an A.N.A. employee of Melbourne was critically injured when a Wackett Trainer aircraft crashed at Lockhart this afternoon.  He was saved from being burnt in the plane by a Lockhart youth, Colin Smith, l8, who had been his passenger.  The plane was owned by ANA and was used by the company to train its pilots. Burke, accompanied by three Wagga Aero Club planes, flew to Lockhart on a goodwill visit.
The crash occurred at about 3 p.m. when Burke was going up for the third time. The plane climbed to about 150 feet, when the left wing dipped, the engine stalled and the machine crashed sideways into a paddock.  Smith, only slightly hurt, scrambled from the wrecked plane and had managed to drag Burke out of it and to a spot 20 yards distant, when the plane burst into flames. Aero Club members tried to put out the fire but the blaze kept them at a distance. Burke had not recovered consciousness when he was transferred to Wagga Hospital."

25.8.62 Dismantled by members of Australian Aircraft Restoration Group, trucked from Moorabbin to Wandin Vic for storage on the property of AARG member Nelson Wilson.
62 Stored in open reassembled on Nelson Wilson's property, Wandin

AARG aircraft were evicted from Nelson Wilson's property after a dispute between members
63 The Wackett was assembled and displayed at a motor service station on the Warburton Highway at Lillydale, alongside Avro Anson VH-FIA and AARG's DH.60 Moth VH-UKV with just the upper wings attached (which gave it the appearance of a Westland Widgeon).

VH-AGP suffered badly in the open weather during its display at the garage
.63 Moved from Wandin back to Moorabbin for storage dismantled with aircraft components in the AARG's compound, which was the first set of establishing the Moorabbin Air Museum. Aircraft's condition was poor and would require restoration before assembled for display

Troublingly, a photograph taken of A3-176 in RAAF olive drab paintwork parked outside at Bankstown with engine removed, was reportedly taken in late 1959.
- If that date is correct then -176 was not used as the basis for VH-FBD's rebuild as a KS.3 despite KSAS quoting c/n 410
- More likely the photo was taken in 1957 when taken out of storage prior to rebuild as VH-FBD

Purchased ex CDC by partnership of Charles Eather & Leo Bennett, Sydney, who planned to establish a charter business at Mascot. Eather had been a First Officer on Ansett Airways Lockheed 10 Electra US courier services from Mascot.
11.45 Ferried from RAAF Narrandera to Mascot by Charles Eather. He recollects the flight in his book Syd's Pirates:
"We had also paid the Receiver of Public Monies £250 to become the proud owner of a Wackett trainer. To take possession we rushed off to the RAAF Care & Maintenance Station at Narrandera. This was the first time I had ever approached a Wackett but we successfully survived a hairy takeoff which, unassisted by a binding right wheel brake, gave us a flight path above directly above a thoroughly terrified - even grovelling - Station Commander. On our return he seemed to suffer an apoplectic fit and, dancing with rage, banished us from his field. Leo and I quickly set out for Mascot, and in the air I found that our compass had failed. It would have been prudent to return to Narrandera, which was still in sight, but the wrath of the Station Commander discouraged us."

Canberra Times newspaper 7.1.47:
UNCLE AND GIRL KILLED IN CRASH OF MONOPLANE
SYDNEY, Monday (6.1.47) A man was terribly injured and his brother and elder daughter were
killed when their Wackett Monoplane crashed shortly after taking off from Bankstown aerodrome this afternoon. The killed were: Norman Verne Bush, 40, of Strathfield, and Helena Bush, 9, daughter of Geoffrey Bush, 34, who was seriously injured. Norman Bush was piloting the plane, while Geoffrey and the girl were sitting in the cockpit. The aircraft had travelled about 600 yards when it began to circle the field as if about to return to land.  Suddenly it nose-dived and crashed heavily into a ploughed field. The pilot's body was thrown clear, but Geoffrey Bush and his daughter were still strapped in the cockpit and both were terribly injured. The girl was.dead before she could be taken to hospital.  Her father sustained head injuries, fractured right arm, compound fracture and dislocation of the right knee, and severe lacerations to the right knee. Mr. James Taylor, on whose dairy
farm the plane crashed, ran with his employees to the wreck and removed the injured man and his daughter.  They were placed in an R.A.A.F ambulance and rushed to Canterbury Hospital, but the girl was dead on arrival. The brothers had made several flights today because their shop was shut as the result of the master butchers' strike.
The plane was formerly a R.A.A.F. trainer, sold through the Disposals Commission, and bought by the Bush brothers a week before Christmas. Both brothers held pilots licences.

Wackett Trainer Display Fuselage:

A CA-6 fuselage frame was located and collected from the former RAAF wartime airfield at Tocumwal NSW in 1978 by Brian Head.

It has been identified as a material spare frame serial MS-5, from wartime CAC production, and never used on an operational aircraft. The fuselage was acquired by military aircraft enthusiast Malcolm Long, who moved his aircraft collection from Melbourne to Coolangatta in 1979. His smaller aircraft were displayed on loan to the Chewing Gum Field Air Museum at Tallebudgera Qld, where the CA-6 fuselage frame underwent restoration for display. The rear end was restored using stringers and formers from the rear fuselage of YA-1 Cropmaster VH-ENM. In 1986 Malcolm Long moved his base to Air World, Wangaratta Victoria, where the completed Wackett fuselage was displayed.

Following the closure of Air World in 2002, this Wackett fuselage was acquired from Malcolm Long by Mark Pilkington, Melbourne to add to his collection of CA-6 parts for his proposed restoration of VH-AGP & -BLV.
